Why our status page shows real numbers, not a green checkmark

A lot of private server status pages are just a static image that says "online" until someone remembers to change it. We wanted something that couldn't lie by omission.

The number on our homepage and /status page comes from asking the login server directly, right now, how many sessions it has open — and asking every backend service whether it's actually still registered on the message bus. If a service goes down, it just disappears from the page. No manual updates, no stale badges.
